WHAT SHOULD I EAT FOR HORMONE BALANCE?

There’s no way around it, what wechoose to eat and cook can dramatically impact our hormones (and how we feel, look and live) as a result.

This is because the nutrients we derive from food are the raw building blocks that make up our hormones. Our hormones utilize these macro and micronutrients to synthesize and produce more hormones, as well as communicate effectively with one another.

Because this requirement is vast (especially for women in their reproductive years depending on where you’re at in your cycle), the more we can incorporate a variety of real, nutrient-dense foods into our diet, the easier we can meet these needs, which ultimately equates to balanced hormones and a symptom-free menstrual cycle.

HORMONE BALANCING RECIPE TIPS

+ Source Local and High Quality Foods When Possible

Opting for local, high quality foods (such as organic produce, grass-fed and pasture-raised meat and poultry, wild-caught seafood, etc.) ensures you’re cooking with food free of hormone-disrupting pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, while optimizing the flavor and nutrient-density factor of your recipes.

+ ALWAYS Read Ingredient Labels

One of my go-to tips for clients is to read as many ingredient labels as you can when purchasing foods. The less ingredients, the better. The longer the ingredient list (especially with a ton of weird additives you can’t pronounce) the more likely they are to have processed oils, sugar and shelf-stabilizing chemicals that mess with hormone balance.

+ Rotate Recipes and Foods Based on Where You’re At In Your Menstrual Cycle

If you’re a woman in your reproductive years, your nutrient needs change due to hormone fluctuations based on where you’re at in your menstrual cycle (i.e. you need more iron during your period due to blood loss, etc.). Rotating in a variety of foods during each phase helps to meet these needs as well as optimize gut health (which is directly linked to hormone balance).

+ Cook with Anti-Inflammatory Oils

One of the simplest and most effective swaps you can make to optimize your meals and hormone health is to replace any inflammatory vegetable oils (canola, grape seed, sunflower, safflower, etc.) with unrefined cooking oils like avocado oil, coconut oil, grass-fed ghee or butter and extra virgin olive oil. This also means avoiding these oils in any packaged foods your purchase (i.e. read those ingredient labels)!

+ Use An “Add In” vs. “Take Away” Mentality

When cooking any recipe, think of how you can “add in” other ingredients to up both the flavor and hormone balance factor (i.e. adding in spices, fresh herbs, a new vegetable, etc.). It’s much more fun then thinking of what you “can’t have” and it’s a great way to sneak in more nutrients your hormones need.

  • Author: Lauren Chambers

  • Servings: 8-12

  • Recipe Type: Entree, soup, dinner, meal

  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 6 strips uncured, organic bacon (I like this brand)
  • 2 tbsp grass-fed ghee
  • 1 Walla Walla sweet onion, diced
  • Kernels from 4 ears of corn (approximately 5-6 cups)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • fresh black pepper to taste
  • 4 medium golden or russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • Optional 2 yellow squash or 1 cup butternut squash to thicken, peeled and chopped
  • 2-3 cups bone broth
  • 1 can full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • Optional 1 cup shredded dairy-free cheese, like this brand

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and blot with paper towel to remove grease, then reserve for topping. Pour out all but 1 tbsp of bacon grease from the pot, keeping the remaining tbsp in to flavor the soup.
  2. Add in the grass-fed ghee and once melted, stir in the diced onion, cooking until translucent, about 5 or so minutes.
  3. Once onion is cooked, add in minced garlic and spices, stirring another minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the corn kernels, chopped potatoes and optional yellow or butternut squash.
  5. Add in bone broth and coconut milk, then cover the soup pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, simmering 15-20 minutes, until the potato and squash is soft and cooked through.
  6. Scoop 4 cups or about 1/2 of the chowder to a blender and puree until smooth, then pour back into the pot. This creates that creamy chowder consistency.
  7. Stir in optional raw tbsp of honey and dairy-free cheese.
  8. Top with crispy bacon pieces + fresh thyme to serve.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Makes great leftovers!
